BRITISH LIGHT MUSIC
CLASSICS VOLUME 3
CDA67148
Like its predecessors, this disc
contains pieces that to listeners in their forties will be like mother's
milk . . . Perfection of a kind is what light music classics are all
about. Clive Richardson's Melody on the Move, Trevor Duncan's The
Girl From Corsica, Ronald Binge's Miss Melanie - these are
exquisitely constructed miniatures, hauntingly melodic, magically if
obviously orchestrated, with a sweet emotional charge that high
seriousness can only allude to. Cavil apart, Corp's performances are
sumptuous. Paul Driver |

BRITISH LIGHT MUSIC
CLASSICS VOLUME 4
CDA67400
The mixture is as before - lots of well-known
melodies, the titles and composers of which we all have trouble remembering,
except perhaps for Eric Coates's By the Sleepy Lagoon (forever associated
with 'Desert Island Disc'), In a Monastery Garden, and perhaps Jamaican
Rumba. Marching Strings will be familiar to all as the signature tune of
'Top of the Form'. A couple of the titles seem not to have been heard for
many years, although once popular, such as The Doge's March from 'The
Merchant of Venice' incidental music, and particularly the haunting Keltic
Lament of John Foulds which it seems hasn't been recorded in many a long
year. The CD also contains a complete performance of the Petite Suite de
Concert of Coleridge-Taylor, containing the well-known Demande et Réponse |

THE
MAID OF THE MOUNTAINS
CDA67190
Encouraged by the success of The
Geisha, The Maid of The Mountains - the smash hit of 1917 -
was recorded. A more romantic tale than The Geisha,
it has probably even more hit numbers, the most famous of which are A
bachelor gay, Love will find a way, Husbands and wives and A
paradise for two. There are also humerous interludes from Richard
Suart. All in all well over an hour's tuneful and good-natured
entertainment with a strong cast directed by the master of English light
music, Ronald Corp.

SULLIVAN - The Golden Legend
CDA67280
During the Victorian era The Golden Legend was
second only to Handel's Messiah in popularity and is regarded by Sullivan
experts as his finest concert work. Never before recorded in its entirety,
Hyperion and Ronald Corp, with support from the Sir Arthur Sullivan Society
and The D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, have resurrected this masterpiece.
During the summer of 1886 following on from the huge success that was The
Mikado, Sullivan hid himself away in a cottage in Yorktown and composed a
secular cantata that Gilbert was to recognise as "the biggest thing you've
done". Scenes following the premiere at the Leeds Festival on October 15th
transcended any known before, with the audience on its feet waving
programmes and hats, climbing on chairs and hurling flowers. The choir had
formed an opinion of its own of the work at rehearsal, and had accumulated
bouquets under their chairs to launch at the composer.

Rutland Boughton
Aylesbury Games Concertos
CDA67185
This world-premiere recording demonstrates the versatility of the
English composer who for too long has been associated only with The Immortal
Hour. Although there is this association with Boughton, it was as a composer
of large-scale choral and orchestral works that he first drew attention to
himself in the early years of the twentieth century, and it was to
orchestral music that he returned in the 1920's when circumstances forced
him to abandon is operatic experiments. |
